Having a family member with a communication difficulty was my initial reason for developing an interest in speech therapy and later, pursuing it as a career path and eventually becoming completely passionate about serving families with loved ones experiencing communication disorders.
Working in a country that is underserved for speech therapists saw me needing to devise sustainable solutions in order to continue serving my clients whilst avoiding the burn-out. Close to 10 years ago, I began recruiting and training speech therapist assistants. I started with 1 and grew from there. To date, I continue to work with speech therapist assistants, which has seen me be able to duplicate myself, so to speak, extend our services to more and more families and free me up to do more of the things I couldn’t do when I had back to back cases, therapy-planning, reports, etc.
However, as the number of speech therapist assistants grew and the number of clients we were serving, a new problem, or as I like to look at it, a new solution begging to be discovered, presented itself. Each time I recruited new assistants, I needed to train them on the same content I had trained previous assistants on. In addition, I did not mind my older assistants getting a refresher on what they had already received training in, but they were not always available at the time I was running the training.
As my clinic grew and got busier, it became increasingly difficult to gather everyone in the same space at the same time in order for me to run a training. Besides, I also needed to devise a way of not running repeat training sessions.

STTOTS is a dream come true for me in many ways;
It’s a way for me to leverage my time better by not running the same training over and over again
It allows for the training to be accessible on demand by any of my staff
For the first time, it gives me the opportunity to make the training I offer my staff available to anyone else who would like to learn how to implement best practice when working with persons with a communication disorder
It is also my small contribution to knowledge creation in the field of speech therapy particularly in regions that have a shortage of speech therapists
It is not unusual for a situation such as finding yourself having to first, understand your loved one’s communication challenges, then get yourself in a position to help them improve their skills, to start to find yourself interested in learning more. Even perhaps see yourself becoming really passionate about whatever it is your loved one is finding challenging.
For this reason, STTOTS can be consumed by professionals as well as people with no qualification in speech therapy. So yes, even you the parent of a child with a communication disorder.
